It is the values of life on the land and the principles of hard work that are the foundation of The Midfield Group and our founder, Colin McKenna.
Getting back to basics, believing in yourself and never underestimating the power of hard work.
It was those beliefs, an eye for livestock and a faith in the lush green pastures and fertile farmland of the region he called home, which prompted the young stock and station agent to enter into an arrangement with a local abattoir to process his livestock and offer it for sale in Melbourne.
The year was 1975 and Midfield Meats was born.
The arrangement proved fruitful and when the opportunity arose to purchase the municipal abattoir in 1988, Colin took a punt on the business.
Located in Warrnambool, in the heart of Victoria's pristine Great South Coast region and one of Australia's prime dairying regions, Colin and a group of dedicated key staff have expanded the business to a company with multiple divisions which is a major player in the domestic and export market, with beef, lamb, veal, mutton and their by-products traversing Australia and the globe.
Despite the expansion, the fundamentals have never waned. The Midfield Group, as we are now known, is a self-sufficient organisation, with control over product from paddock to plate. Colin, now managing director, still enjoys a hands-on role, purchasing and casting a knowing eye over livestock. He is also known to pull on a hairnet and work on the processing line if the need requires.
You can't get more hands on than that.
The key staff members who have been a backbone of support are still there and now Colin's family are involved too, with the next generation playing pivotal roles in the group's day-to-day running.

Our Group is 100 per cent Australian owned and operated. We are a staunch supporter of the area where we are based, employing more than 600 people from the surrounding district and creating a variety of breeding programs designed to cement supply and support local industry.
And all signs point to further expansion in the future.
Using the Great South Coast region's lush pastures as our inspiration, we have a dependability necessary to survive in the cut-throat world of business.
